Lent: A Time For Spiritual House Cleaning

It is an amazing fact of life that we can acquire so much ‘STUFF” that we need to build bigger and better barns to store the “STUFF” that we have acquired. I state this not as any type of judgement, but a simple fact.

As a religious, vowed to poverty, I have to admit that I am as guilty as many of gathering the “STUFF” and boxing it up, putting it in a closet for another day. Why? I imagine there may be something in my ancestral roots, possibly the Irish Famine, that encourages me to be a gatherer but, Praise God, not to the level of “HORDER.” Having had several assignment changes, I have had the opportunity to confront those boxes. I am sure those of you who have had several job assignments and movements have had to face this issue.

Where does all of this lead us this Lent? I imagine there may be a lot of “STUFF” that we have accumulated that we need to take to the Lord and ask for the kindness of the Lord. “The Lord is kind and Merciful, slow to Anger and rich in compassion” (Psalm 145:8).

So, Lent can be a time for spiritual house cleaning. It is wonderful time to get closer to the Lord and the Sacraments of the Church. How wonderful a time it is in preparation to the wonderful events of Holy Week and Easter Sunday.

Please check out our parish on the web --www.stnorbert.org -- for all of the wonderful things that are available here this Lent, which help with the spiritual house cleaning. Questions that we all might consider:

  •        How long has it been since I have been to the Sacrament of Reconciliation?
  •       What relationships in the family are there that might be in need of reconciling?
  •       Am I a faithful Disciple of Jesus Christ?
  •       Do I let anything interfere with my Sunday obligation “to make Holy the Lord’s Day”?

There are so many other areas that one would need to examine in prayerful reflection. However, don’t make the mistake and see Lent as an opportunity to beat yourself up spiritually. It is an opportunity to draw closer to Jesus and demonstrate through our example as Disciples of Christ how loving and caring Jesus truly is.

Blessing this Lent with your SPIRITUAL HOUSE CLEANING,

Father Mike
